Thatta: Awaz Foundation Pakistan and its partner Sindh Radiant Organization (SRO) of district Thatta extended most sincere appreciation to the anti-terrorism court of Lahore for handing death sentence to Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali alias Bagga for raping a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway last year.
The decision of the court announced on March 20 to punish the convicts with life imprisonment under the charges of abduction and 14- year imprisonment to each accused under the charges of robbery is quite just.
The court also imposed Rs200,000 fine each. However, Awaz Foundation Pakistan on behalf of civil society organizations demands of the government to ensure legislation at provincials’ level to end these crimes against women and children.
It is hoped that the decisions like these will help lessen crime like these against women and children in the country while creating a safer environment for them to live.
Pakistan is considered the 6th most dangerous country for women. Therefore, we are hopeful that the present government will take further actions and ensure all survivors of rape have access to justice through further strengthening and empowering the institutions to make our society a livable place for women.
Awaz Foundation Pakistan has been raising voice against sexual violence against women and children. We are an independent non-governmental organization; follow rights based approach to raise voices for creating rightful spaces and choices of life for all particularly marginalized segments including women, children and young people since 1995.
Awaz Foundation on behalf of Ujala and it’s 48 partners across Pakistan once again appreciates the decision of the court and demand for provision of justice to all the survivors across the country and to curb further occurrence through proper legislation at provincial level.
