Deadline for Afghan refugees voluntary return nears end ,Crackdown across KPK to begin from September

Peshawar — The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has set August 31 as the final deadline for the voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees.Those failing to leave by this date will face a province wide crackdown starting September.

District Level Committees Formed

According to official directives, the provincial government has instructed district administrations and security agencies to prepare for the operation.Committees comprising deputy commissioners, police officers, and representatives of other departments have been established at the district level to oversee the campaign against illegal Afghan residents.

Initial Phase in Major Cities

The operation will first target five major cities, including Peshawar, before expanding to the tribal districts.Under the supervision of security forces, raids will be carried out to apprehend Afghan nationals residing illegally, who will then be deported.

 

Fake Identity Cards to be Cancelled

Authorities have also decided to cancel national identity cards issued fraudulently to foreigners without Pakistani citizenship.In Peshawar, special checks will be conducted in sensitive and densely populated areas such as Hayatabad, University Road, Khyber Bazaar, Namak Mandi, and other commercial hubs.

Thousands Gather at Azakhel Clearance Point

Meanwhile, large numbers of Afghan families from across the country are reaching the Azakhel clearance center in Nowshera to complete repatriation formalities.

Lack of Basic Facilities Raises Concerns

Reports highlight severe shortages of basic facilities at clearance centers.Families have complained about the absence of clean drinking water, shade, and restrooms.

Civil society organizations and local communities have urged the government and UNHCR to ensure adequate arrangements so that the repatriation process is carried out in a dignified and humane manner.
