Five schoolchildren rescued in Battagram chairlift operation

Military's SSG troops made daylong efforts to rescue trapped schoolchildren, teachers

RAWALPINDI/BATTAGRAM : August 22,2023: Five children were successfully rescued by Pakistan Army troops one through a helicopter sling operation and four by ground operation after two wires of a cable car snapped in Battagram’s Allai tehsil on Tuesday morning, leaving at least eight, including schoolchildren and a teacher, stranded over 600 feet mid-air.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a statement that the GO SSG is himself supervising the operation. Pakistan army’s SSG troops made great efforts for rescuing the stranded school children and teachers who remained hanged in a bucket at a 600 feet height on a ravine in Battagram area of Khyber Pukhtunkhaw (KPk) province for more than 12 hours . The locally made chair lift had hanged when one of its cable broke down mid-air at around 7.00 AM. Every Pakistani had taken the news of trapping of schoolchildren with a pain and the entire nation was praying for their safe return and repatriation to their families. The rescue teams took a number of measures carefully taken to ensure that the hanging bucket does not get unbalanced . The rescuers were fully conscious that any air pressure or moving of the bucket could risk the lives of the schoolchildren and other trapped persons. So from the start of the operation SSG commandoes were following a very carefully planned scheme to protect the trapped schoolchildren and other persons. The military troops brought a first relief when the first schoolchild was airlifted through a helicopter ‘s sling operation. The rescue operation was halted when the weather and darkness made it difficult. After a short hiatus , the operation was relaunched from the ground . It worked well and in an hour or so the rescuers managed to rescue four more schoolchildren.
