Islamabad : The appointment of a key Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) official Maj General , Faisal Naseer , as Chief coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) is of extraordinary significance.
Maj General Faisal Naseer ,being a key official who has experience of counter terrorism, can lead NACTA to make it an effective body to play a designed role in countering terrorism. Pakistan is facing terrorism with its worst form . Anti Pakistan’s forces are targeting every institution of Pakistan including security forces , police , and other law enforcing agencies (LEAs) and they are pushing forward their agenda with force.
The government has appointed Maj General , Faisal Naseer , as Chief Coordinator for NACTA for a term of three years. This important appointment for NACTA shows , the government and other security related departments are putting in an effective strategy to win the war against terror.
Pakistan is paying heavy price for the fight against terrorism . In the given situation , it is necessary that Pakistan ‘s anti terrorism department must work in full coordination.
NACTA ,since its inception in 2008, is almost dysfunctional. It was assigned a key role of sharing classified information with concerned departments of the state and workout an effective strategy to counter terror activities in the country as and when any terror activity occurs. In the last 18 years , NACTA has been a non-starter rather a controversial entity . It failed to secure confidence of LEAs. In the past , LEAs were reluctant to share any terrorism related secret information or lead with NACTA authorities as they include some civilian officials.
Now with ISI’s key man in the lead, one can hope that NACTA would perform its role of a frontline institution to coordinate among all concerned departments and give due support to all institutions fighting the fierce on-going war against terror.
