Govt okays gas load management plan for winter

Domestic sector gets unintrupted supply

ISLAMABAD: Heavilly dependent on imported liquified natural gas ( LNG) , the government on Thursday okayed a gas load management plan for winter season 2021-22.
Petroleum Division had presented a priortised gas load management plan to the energy committee in a meeting held here. Asad Umar, head of energy committee, chaired the meeting.
According to the revised plan of gas load management, domestic sector topped all other sectors for gas supply in winter season. The energy committee was informed that the domestic sector will be ensured 100 % gas supply during the winter season. The domestic sector consumes 100 % extra gas during peak winter season due to use of gas heaters and geysers. This forces the government to curtail gas supply to other sectors like compressed natural gas ( CNG) , capitive power sector and industrial sector.

Since Pakistan’s domestic gas production has shrunk considerably in recent years, its depedence on imported LNG has gone up.

The energy committee was informed that Pakistan has booked 10 vessels of LNG each for December 2021 and January 2022 that will help the government maintain smooth supply to domestic and other prioritised sectors in winter season.
