ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has set an age limit for marriage .The IHC bench headed by justice Sattar Babar gave a verdict on anti children law . The verdict noted that the children below the age 18 years would not be unlawful.
The senate had passed a bill in the parliament in April 2019 which had imposed penality of Rs 200000, besides three years severe punishment on violation of the law. The IHC in its Tuesday’s verdict put ban on marriage of children below age of 18 years .
The IHC verdict on minimum age is of far reaching impact as it will make the legal position on the Marriage Act 1929.
The verdict will so serve to out an end to the incidents of minors marriage in the country.
In recent years, a number of cases of underage children’s marriage were reported from different areas of Pakistan .

According to the amendment, marriage under 18 years can lead to a fine of Rs200,000 and three years of strict punishment for facilitators.
Senator Sherry Rehman presented the bill to be passed unanimously, however, Senator Ghafoor Haidri raised an objection saying the bill should be sent to Islamic Ideology Council (IIC) for further deliberation.
Following the debate on the bill, the Senate chairman sought voting and passed the bill with opposition of five votes.
The Senate Standing Committee for Human Rights had approved the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Bill 2018 on Jan 30, 2022.
