Medical ethics must not remain confined to textbooks , but reflected in daily practice: Samina Mumtaz Zehri

Karachi, 10 January 2026 – Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, while speaking at the IMECON26 Pre-conference Workshops Inauguration Ceremony, stated that medical education, at its core, remains a deeply human enterprise, centered on empowering educators, supporting learners, and ultimately serving communities through improved healthcare outcomes.

She observed that the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has consistently upheld the values of competence, ethics, and responsibility in medical training. She noted that under the leadership of Professor Dr Khalid Masood Gondal, CPSP recognises that strong education produces strong doctors. By investing in faculty development and encouraging educational dialogue, CPSP has contributed to a more reflective and responsive culture of medical education.

Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri remarked that IMECON provides an inclusive platform where meaningful academic discourse can flourish. She added that Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry exemplifies this philosophy in practice by prioritising learning environments that foster professional growth. She commended the institution’s commitment to nurturing both educators and students, ensuring that quality education translates into compassionate patient care.

Acknowledging institutional leadership, Senator Zehri also recognised Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti as a strong advocate of education as a tool for empowerment and national development. She noted that his emphasis on accessible and sustainable institutions has created opportunities for countless students and professionals. She further acknowledged the leadership of Dr Ali Farhan Razi for ensuring that institutional growth remains grounded in integrity, purpose, and values.

Speaking in her capacity as a policymaker and representative of the people, Senator Zehri emphasised her responsibility to speak for patients who enter hospitals with fear in their hearts and hope in their eyes, particularly the poor, the elderly, and the powerless. She stressed that for such individuals, medical negligence is not merely an error but can be the difference between life and death. She underlined that medical ethics must not remain confined to textbooks but must be reflected in daily practice, where care, humility, and conscience safeguard human dignity and build public trust in healthcare systems.

Expressing confidence in the outcomes of the initiative, Senator Zehri stated that such efforts would positively influence teaching practices, strengthen medical ethics, and improve healthcare outcomes across Pakistan, particularly for vulnerable communities.
Concluding her remarks, she said it was an honour to be part of the event and heartening to witness dedicated professionals working collectively for a greater cause. She extended her best wishes for the success of IMECON 2026 and to all participating delegates.
