.Islamabad: The Rawalpindi/ Islamabad Union of Journalists (Workers) has elected its new leadership for the 2025-26 term, with all office bearers declared elected unopposed. The election process, which saw significant participation, concluded smoothly, reaffirming the commitment to democratic values within the journalist community.
A total of 70 candidates had submitted their nomination papers for 19 positions within the union. Initially, multiple candidates contested key posts, including four for the president’s position, 11 for the two vice president seats, and seven for general secretary. However, after the withdrawal process, all nominees were elected without opposition.
Mazhar Iqbal has been elected as the new president, with Farhan Jafri and Dr. Sajjad assuming roles as vice presidents. Ruby Butt has been elected vice president (women), while Hameedullah Abid will serve as general secretary. Other key office bearers include Adeel Raza as finance secretary, Czechangez Khan Jadoon as additional general secretary, and Sohail Siddiq and Nayab Gohar as joint secretaries. Bushra Akhund has been appointed joint secretary (women), while Waqas Javed will oversee information and social media affairs.
The 10-member executive council includes Sohaib Bin Noor, Raja Ijaz, Siddique Ahmed Nayar, Malik Taimoor Awan, Faisal Baiga, Haq Nawaz Gilani, Nadeem Siddiqui, Dr. Liaqat Jadoon, Haq Nawaz Bhutto, and Faiq Sajjad.
With the election process now complete, the newly elected leadership is set to take charge, focusing on strengthening journalist rights and addressing key industry challenges. The union has pledged to work towards better working conditions, press freedom, and professional development opportunities for journalists in the region.
