Pakistan, China to collaborate study on earth science research

Beijing, September 7th (Xinhua) — In the midst of the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) and the launch of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), China and Pakistan have achieved a new achievement in technological cooperation.

China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) will be formally establish in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, in October this year, sources from the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) said.

The CPJRC will harness the joint efforts of China and Pakistan to conduct research in the field of Earth science, promote cooperation in technology, talent development, and aspire to build a high-level technology innovation platform for both countries in the future, according to Hong Tianhua, the Executive Director of the China-Pakistan Earth Science Research CPJRC.

The CPJRC is jointly initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and will be based at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Chengdu and Quaid-i-Azam University in Pakistan. It will also involve collaboration with research institutes affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other domestic research institutions, as well as universities in Pakistan, such as Quaid-i-Azam University and University of Peshawar.
Hong Tianhua explained that the CPJRC will engage in joint research in natural disaster and risk management, geological structures and tectonic activities, climate change and environmental effects,etc.

Furthermore, the CPJRC will annually organize training programs for young Pakistani researchers to enhance their research capabilities. It will also assist outstanding Pakistani students in applying for scholarships and pursuing advanced studies at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Science and Technology of China. Academic seminars and conferences will be held to facilitate academic exchanges between scientists from both countries.

In addition, the CPJRC will also facilitate investments and the localization of relevant technologies for enterprises and institutions from China and Pakistan.

“The Chinese Academy of Sciences has many high-tech companies under its umbrella, and some mature technologies have been successfully applied in various fields and countries, for example, in the fields of green energy and digital technology,” Hong said the CPJRC can assist these enterprises in going to Pakistan to contribute to Pakistan’s development through technology.

“We hope to establish a high-level platform for technological cooperation between China and Pakistan, and gradually extend it to neighboring countries, providing technological and talent support for the construction of the ‘Belt and Road’ and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor,” he added.
