ISLAMABAD. In a latest development , Pakistan has formally approached to Interpol for seeking extradition of its former ambassador to the United States (US), Hussain Haqqani.
Hussain Haqqani had been Pakistan’s ambassador to US during 2008 to 2013 when Pakistan People Party (PPP) was in power.
Mr Haqqani was known for his close links in Washington and as an ambassador of Pakistan to US he made several controversial statements that created his image of a dubious character back at home.
Some powerful circles in Islamabad were extremely disturbed over his pro Washington approach as Pakistan’s ambassador to US.
It was his tenure when Pakistan embassy in US issued hundreds, may be thousands, of visas to Americans without proper secrutiny .
The same issue had later created a serious trouble for Pakistan as majority of the visas issued by Pakistan’s embassy in Washington during Hussain Haqqani’s tenure as Pakistan’s ambassador to US had been issued to doubious characters.
Pakistan’s follow- up investigations had revealed that the majority of US citizens who came to Pakistan on visas issued by US embassy in PPP government were regular employees of Black Water , US infamous security company and they had come to Pakistan on a specific agenda to complete.
Ramond Davis was one of such US operatives who were in Pakistan on a contractor’s visa and he had killed two youth in Lahore for chasing him in 2011. .
Pakistan would love to get Hussain Haqqani back through Interpol and its authorities will use every option for it. But Hussain Haqqani, being a cunning character, will be aware of sensitivity involved in his case . He will use his links in Washington to avoid his arrest and handing over to Pakistan through Interpol.
Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has approached to Interpol through a letter to arrest Hussain Haqqani and handover him to it. Accroding to FIA letter addressed to Interpol, Hussain Haqqani was involved in misappropriation of funds amounting to USD 2 million as ambassador to US and his extradition was needed for investigations in the case filed against him in 2018.
On Pakistan’ s request, Interpol will issue Red Warrant for arrest of Hussain Haqqani and subsequently handing him over to Pakistan.
