ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has welcomed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) decision of adopting a resolution to provide financial help to cash- starved Afghanistan.
The UNSC had passed a resolution on December 22, 2021 for financial support to war-torn Afghanistan.
Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman, Asim Iftikhar, on Thursday issued a statement, saying UNSC’s move to adopt the resolution on Afghanistan was a timely and encouraging development. The statement said Pakistan wants early financial support to avert fast deteriorating human crisis in that country.
The United States of America presented the resolution before the UNSC. The clearance of the resolution by UNSC is of great importance for funding to cash -starved Afghanistan. Afghanistan is heading for a worse human catastraphic situation. Its 28.6 million people are forced to brave chilling winter in the open without shelter and food.
Pakistan is striving to make the world realise that delay in action in supporting starving Afghanistan can result in worst kind of human tragedy. It had hosted an extraordinary session of Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) last week to give a final call to the world community to help Afghan government by providing it much- needed funds.
The UNSC resolution has come in the follow up of OIC session held in Islamabad.
Pakistan’s permanent envoy at UN, Munir Akram, told a press conference here on Wednesday that UNSC resolution has set a path for financial help of Afghan government. He said UNSC move will also help release of frozen $ 10 billion to Afghanistan.
