ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday a three-month electricity relief package aimed at reducing power tariffs for domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers across Pakistan.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad to mark Iqbal Day, the Prime Minister revealed that the government would introduce the Electricity Sahulat Package for the winter months of December, January, and February.
“This package will significantly reduce electricity prices for all sectors—domestic, industrial, and commercial,” Sharif said, highlighting the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on consumers.
For domestic users, the new package will establish a flat rate of Rs26.07 per unit for additional electricity consumption, offering savings of Rs11.42 to Rs26 per unit. This discounted rate will be implemented nationwide.
Industrial consumers will see reductions of between Rs5.72 and Rs15 per unit, while commercial consumers will benefit from even steeper discounts, with savings ranging from Rs13.46 to Rs22 per unit. This equates to an overall reduction of 34% to 47% in electricity costs for commercial users.
In his address, the Prime Minister underscored the wider economic benefits of the initiative, stressing that the reduction in energy costs would play a crucial role in stimulating economic growth across the country.
“Lower electricity prices will drive industrial expansion, boost agricultural productivity, foster business growth, and enhance exports, ultimately strengthening Pakistan’s economy,” he said.
It is also noteworthy that last month, Pakistan renegotiated costly contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and terminated agreements with five of the oldest IPPs to help bring down power tariffs.
Pakistan’s manufacturing sector has long raised concerns about the high cost of electricity, arguing that elevated tariffs make local products uncompetitive in global markets.
