Reddit Enhances Search Functionality with AI Summary Trials

Reddit intends to introduce AI-generated search summaries, as part of its expanding alliances with digital behemoths

San Francisco, October 18, 2024: To simplify user interaction with the platform’s vast amount of content, Reddit has revealed plans to use AI-generated summaries for its search results.

During the company’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman announced the project and emphasized the platform’s growth, pointing out that it now has over 342.3 million weekly active users and over one billion monthly searches.

Reddit’s AI summaries will provide succinct, perceptive descriptions of subjects at the top of search results pages, enabling users to find relevant material quickly.

Huffman emphasized that Reddit’s efforts to improve its search experience are aligned with this action. He stated, “This is another step toward improving searches for everyone.”

Over the previous year, the organization reported a 57% rise in user interaction, highlighting the rising need for effective content navigation.

Reddit has agreements with big companies like Google and OpenAI to support its adoption of AI technologies. Reddit has agreed to pay Google $60 million a year to use its content to train its artificial intelligence models.

To get real-time content for ChatGPT and other products, OpenAI can also utilize Reddit’s Data API.

Huffman also said that Reddit will no longer allow free data scraping, posing a problem for Microsoft and other businesses that now have to pay for data access.

Huffman highlighted the importance of controlling Reddit’s data and ensured responsible usage. He stated, “Without such agreements, we can’t manage how our data is presented or prevent misuse.”

These actions demonstrate Reddit’s dedication to using AI to enhance user experience while protecting its data assets via tactical alliances.
