Sri Lankan citizen lynching case; verdict upholds rule of law

LAHORE : A local anti terrorist court on Monday announced its judgement in Sri Lankan citizen, Priyantha Kumara’s lynching case here . The court awarded death penalty to 6 accused , life term to 9 accused and 2 years term to another 76 accused in Sri Lankan citizen Priyantha Kumara lynching case. A charged crowed incited by religious extremists had lynched Priyantha Kumara , a Sri Lankan citizen who was serving in a garment factory in Sialkot a few months ago . The crowed made an allegation of discretion a cause for lynching to the Sri Lankan citizen . The charge had not proven later against the victim. During the investigation it transpired that some employees of the factory had disagreement over working hours with Priyantha Kumara and they used discretion allegation to make the people gather and torture him to death.
The anti terrorist court had heard the case on day- to – day basis and completed its trial in one and half months.
Secretary prosecution Punjab , Nadeem Sarwar, told a press conference after announcement of the verdict that prosecution did day and night work to bring the culprits to the court of law which announced the decision in record minimum time. Mr Nadeen said the anti terrorist court had indicted the accused in the case on March 21, 2022.
According to the court order the culprits who have been awarded death penalty were Taimour, Abdul Rehman, Irshad , Ehtasham Zeb, Ali Hasan and Humair. The court awarded life term to 9 culprits including Rohail Amjad, Mohammad Shoab, Imran Riaz, Sajid Amin, Zhaghum Mehdi, Ali Hamza , Luwman Hyder and Abdus Saboor.
An accused’ Ali Asghar was awarded 5 years term with 50 thousand fine . Only one accused Bilal was acquitted from the case due to lack of evidence. The court appreciated the prosecution and all those departments which played their role in timely completion of trial in the case.
