Ankara: Turkey imposed limits on major social media sites on Wednesday after a deadly attack on the Ankara headquarters of TUSAS, the country’s aerospace and defense firm.
According to the Mirror UK, the lockdown on social media sites like X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok occurred soon after terrorists broke into the company’s building, murdering five people and injuring more than twenty.
NetBlocks, a global internet observatory that monitors cybersecurity and digital governance, confirmed the shutdown of the nation’s social media networks via its X account.
NetBlocks wrote in a post on X, “Confirmed: Live metrics show social media platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok have been restricted in #Turkey.”
“The incident comes as authorities impose a broadcast ban over today’s deadly attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries’ headquarters in Ankara.”
It’s unclear when Turkey’s social media platform lockdown will end in the interim.
Witnesses report that there was a burst of gunfire after a big explosion.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the incident also claimed the lives of the two attackers, a woman and a man.
Turkey’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler blamed the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for the attack, however Yerlikaya did not name the perpetrators.
