ISLAMABAD, December 4, 2024: Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq sharply criticized both the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the government for their actions during and after the November 24 protest, which severely impacted citizens’ rights.
During a contempt petition hearing filed by traders, Justice Farooq questioned the conduct of both sides, pointing out that both PTI and the government had violated citizens’ rights.
He admonished the government for closing whole city, stating, “ It was the responsibility of the government to maintain peace, but you locked down the whole federal capital.”

The government had taken strict measures to prevent PTI protesters from reaching Islamabad by deploying large numbers of riot police and blocking roads with shipping containers.
Despite these efforts, PTI’s protesters broke into the city and reach D-Chowk, in Red Zone which housing key government buildings.
The protest, which had been called by PTI founder Imran Khan, ended with a swift government crackdown on protesters, leading to PTI’s retreat from the capital.
PTI has claimed that several of its workers were killed, and around 1,000 were arrested.

The government, however, denies using live ammunition.
Justice Farooq also referenced the IHC’s November 21 order, which instructed authorities to protect citizens’ rights, including the rights of traders and protesters.
The IHC Chief Justice expressed concern about PTI’s failure to comply with court orders, questioning why traders’ businesses were forced to shut down during the protest.
Sharing his personal experience, Justice Farooq noted that the city’s shutdown even prevented judges, including himself, from entering.
The IHC asked interior ministry to present a detailed report regarding PTI November 26 protest and has adjourned the hearing until next week.
The petition filed by traders highlighted the economic damage caused by the roadblocks and sought accountability from both PTI and the government.
