Pakistan lost final match to NZ, first position in ICC ODI ranking

Iftilhar's 94 runs could not save Pakistan from defeat in final ODI against visiting NZ

KARACHI: May 7,2023; After defeat in the fifth and final ODI of the series against New Zealand, Pakistan lost third place in the ICC ODI ranking.

After defeating New Zealand in fourth match of the 5-match series, Pakistan became number one in the ICC ODI rankings for the first time. It lost fifth match and so the first place in ICC ranking in final ODI against New Zealand .

After 47-run defeat by New Zealand in the last match of the ODI series, Pakistan has moved from the first to the third position in the ICC rankings.

In the last match of the series, in pursuit of New Zealand’s target of 299 runs, Pakistan team scored 252 runs, Iftikhar Ahmed 94 and Salman Ali Agha scored 57 runs.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and invited Babar Azam to bowl for the final match.

The Kiwis were bowled out for 299 in the 50th over, with Will Young scoring 87 and captain Tom Latham 59 runs.

Shan Masood, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Muhammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Shadab Khan, Usama Mir, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Wasim Jr. and Haris Rauf were part of the Pakistan squad for the last ODI.

New Zealand team included captain Tom Latham, Will Young, Tom Blundell, Henry Nicholls, Cole McConchie, Mark Chapman, Adam Milne, Henry Shipley, Ash Sodhi and Matt Henry. In the last ODI of the series, New Zealand won the toss and opened the batting, then on a total score of 32, Tom Blundell scored 15 runs and became the victim of Mohammad Wasim.

After the fall of one wicket, a partnership of 51 runs was formed between Will Young and Henry Nicholls, but then Nichols also returned to the pavilion after scoring 23 runs. Captain Tom Latham and Young took the team score to 157 runs. At this stage Will Young 87 put up 87 runs. He was caught out on Shadab’s ball.

Captain Tom Latham also got going with an innings of 59 runs. Mark Chapman scored 43 runs, McConkey 26 runs and Ravindra 28 runs.

Entire New Zealand team was bowled out for 299 runs in 49.3 overs.

On behalf of Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi took 3 wickets, Shadab and Osama Mir took 2 wickets each while Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim took one wicket each.
In pursuit of New Zealand’s target of 300 runs, Pakistan did not start well, Shaan Masood and captain Babar Azam returned to the pavilion at a total score of 30, Shaan scored only 7 runs and Babar made just 1 run.

Muhammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman got out after scoring 9 runs, after loss of 4 wickets, Agha Salman and Iftikhar Ahmed batted brilliantly and scored half-centuries to give Pakistan hope of victory.

However, then Agha Salman got out after scoring 57 runs and then Pakistan’s wickets continued to fall on one side and on the other Iftikhar Ahmed started playing aggressive shots but he too could not give the team success.

The entire Pakistan team was bowled out for 252 runs in the 47th over, Iftikhar Ahmed remained unbeaten with 94 runs off 72 balls.

Henry Shipley and Rachin Ravindra took 3 and 3 wickets respectively for New Zealand.
