PM Kakar orders crackdown on power thieves

Do not spare anyone involved in power theft . PM to WAPDA officials

ISLAMABAD : Sept 4 : Caretaker prime minister , Anwaarul Haq Kakar , has said Saudi Arabia is investing $ 23 billion in Pakistan over next 5 years. The caretaker prime minister shared these statistics at a meeting chaired by him on the power crisis .

According to the media reports the prime minister was given a detailed presentation by the officials of Power Division and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on total power production, consumption, line losses ,and recovery status .

The prime minister was informed that the power companies were facing fiscal issues due to non payment to dues by the public sector departments , private sector individuals and many other bulk consumers. The prime minister was also informed that a number of campaigns launched by respective governments did not give desired results due to lack of will at the highest level .

Anwaarul Haq Kakar was told by WAPDA officials that the power distribution companies were losing 61 % revenue due to rising trend of power theft and non recovery of the bills .

According to a participant of the meeting , the caretaker prime minister took the level of theft of power and non recovery of bills as a surprise and directed to the concerned authorities to launch a comprehensive crackdown on power thieves and take harsh measures to recover each due penny of power distribution companies from the defaulters.

The caretaker prime minister also sought a comprehensive plan for turning the power distribution system a theft proof in the future. Pakistan’s power distribution system is full of flaws . Its prone to all types of cheating and stealing of power. Of course , the officials of power distribution companies become hands in gloves with the power thieves to either ignore leakages in the system or become a party to it for petty financial gains.
