Subject to Imran Khan Approval, PTI decides to join JCP

Imran Khan's Approval Crucial as PTI Moves to JCP

ISLAMABAD, October 28, 2024: After extensive discussions, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced its decision to join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).

A statement from the party’s political committee confirmed that PTI will nominate members from the opposition to represent the party within the commission.

The committee highlighted the importance of these roles, noting that the opposition members will play a crucial part in the JCP’s decision-making processes.

This recommendation was unanimously approved by the PTI political committee and will be forwarded to the core committee for further endorsement.

However, final approval will be required from PTI founder Imran Khan, who will also authorize the nominations for the opposition representatives.

The JCP, chaired by the Chief Justice, is responsible for appointing Supreme Court judges. Its composition includes the four most senior judges, the Federal Law Minister, the Attorney General, representatives from both the National Assembly and Senate, and a member from the bar councils with at least 15 years of experience.

The commission will determine the number of constitutional benches and judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts.

The JCP is set to be reconstituted following the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which faced significant opposition from the former ruling party.

Additionally, the PTI has expressed its unwavering opposition to any upcoming constitutional amendments proposed by the government, amid discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto regarding a potential “27th Constitutional Amendment.”
